a furry tale…

n a cold winter day the postman brought me a wooden box:

a nice, tiny box

http://i1148.photobucket.com/albums/o562/Martin_Rathmanner/Olight%20i7r/CM150109-11214402_zps548ecba9.jpg

i opened it and found a light and some accessories

i got distracted for a short time – because the chippie must have small hands…

pretty angles and nicely cut

hardly to see where it opens

but i wated to tell the story of a little light i got for christmas:

i putted the box away and here is what it contained:

a Olight i7r – a charging dock with USB cable – a magnetic holder

a carabiner – a manual – two O-rings

together with the dock comes a sticky foil to fix it somewhere

(due to magnets in the light in any position)

the magnetic cap with a plastic pin

the cara“s-biner”

http://i1148.photobucket.com/albums/o562/Martin_Rathmanner/Olight%20i7r/CM150109-11333008_zpse0955140.jpg

if you turn the middle bar you get why its name is “slidelock”

aaand:

the Olight i7r EOS

hard to get the real color with a mobilephone…

perfect finish – but a bit slippery tough

since the surface is not only hard and scratch resistant but also electrically conductive there is only a second rear contact

this contact is spring loaded to connect the negative side from the battery to the lights body

http://i1148.photobucket.com/albums/o562/Martin_Rathmanner/Olight%20i7r/backcontact_zpsdfdx6jrp.gif

when standing in the charging dock the middle (negative pin) opens this contact and the outer ring is positive via the body.

to enable charging the light has to ON  (why is it not mentioned in the manual??)

the head also have a soft knurling and some grooves for better grip

the clear lens is made from polycarbonate (should be scratch resistant)

inside the orange peel reflector you find the LED

Olight used a Cree XP-G2

the light connected to the mgnetic holder connected to the s-biner

unscrewing the head gives access to the battery

Olight delivers a own brand 10440 LiIon battery with 320mAh

there are two O-rings to achieve IPX-7

in the head there is also a spring loaded contact

in the back of the battery tube there is a PCB with the negative pin

since i am a curious man – i had to get the pill out

custom PCB

looks copper-ish

the plastic ring has to go also

tadaa!

and without the positive contact you can see the principle of this 2 mode driver

only contact to the spring -> LOW

full closed contacts the outer ring -> HIGH

the beam is quite floody with a wide angle

some wite walls i hunted…

a short video to show a little how it works

and i made pictures from the manual for you also

0.950 A on HIGH and 260 Lux@1m (Alkaleak)

Amps on HIGH drop ~ 20% in 30 sec with pill only

(maybe due to the thermal safety sensor)

my conclusion:

when i got the light i was not happy with it…

the battery rattles when the light is OFF and the charger did not work!

sure – its a wonderful looking, very lightweight little light in a beautiful wooden(ish) box…

and everything you need is in there also…

and its bright with a simple UI (close for LOW and full close for HIGH)…

but – rattling batteries are a NO GO for me!
i gave away my nitecore sens because of that – and i love the acebeam L10 because it has some foam to prevent ratling…

but when i found out that the pin in the magnetic holder works as a tail switch to open the circuit (you can leave it ON)

and i figured out that the light has to be on to be carged my opinion turned 180°

all my cons are gone and i am happy now with my gift.
